19th Mango Mela concludes at Pinjore

Haryana ia an agrarian state and Governement give special emphasis on development of horticulture along with sericulture and dairy farming besides agriculture. Every year in the beginning of July, when monsoon is about to enter the state a two-day 19th Mango Mela is organised at Pinjore Gardens near Panchkula on by Haryana Tourism, jointly with the Horticulture Department Haryana to boost the horticulture. This year the 19th Mango Mela was organized on july 3 and 4. The main purpose of the Mela is to encourage the farmers to adopt the latest technology in order to increase their production, productivity and quality of product so that they may get maximum return of their produce from their limited holdings by tapping the domestic as well as international markets.

According to Tourism Minister Mr Om PArkash Jain, Mango Mela also provide a forum to the mango growers for better marketing of their produce. It also provide a common platform to the artisans and Self Help Groups to display and sell their handmade handlooms and handicrafts products. The Mela also provide an excellent opportunity to the public to see and taste good quality of mangoes and to be part of the various activities and events to be organized during the Mela. Slogan writing Competition, Face Painting Competition, Tambola, Mehndi Pratiyogita , Mango Eating Competition, Rangoli Fancy Dress Competition and Demo for preparation of Mango products and cultural programme are some attractive features of the Mela . In the Mela a food court had also been set up which will offer variety of F&B items for the visitors. In order to ensure good quality of snacks, stalls had been put up by IHM-Kurukshetra, IHM-Panipat, Allied Institute of Hotel Management-Panchkula, Sarva Institute-Panchkula, Verka, Shankar Chaat, Ishwar Ki Kulfi and Pepsi etc.

As told by Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Agriculture, Mr.Roshan Lal, the Mango production and area under mango cultivation in Haryana has now increased about three times as compared to the year 1990-91. He said that the mango production had increased in the State from 19,900 tonnes in 1990-91 to 64,570 tonnes in the year 2008-09 thanks to the latest technology adopted by the farmers. The area under mango cultivation had also increased from 3,553 hectares to 9,125 hectares during this period. He said that during the year 2010-11, an additional area of 250 hectares would be brought under mango plantation and to achieve this goal, an assistance of Rs. 18,000 per hectares at normal spacing & Rs 24,000 per hectare for the high density planting would be given to the farmers in three years with a maximum limit of four hectares per beneficiary. In Haryana, Mango occupies a prominent position and it is grown in 25 per cent of total area under fruit cultivation. The maximum area under Mango cultivation is in Yamunanagar district of 5419 hectares, Ambala 1257 hectares, Panchkula 950 hectares, Karnal 629 hectares and Kurukshetra 430 hectares..

He said, due care was taken not to hurt the interest of the poorer sections to the least possible extent and that is why the attempt to keep under regulation, the prices of Kerosene and LPG.

Haryana, Mango occupies a prominent position and it is grown in 25 per cent of total area under fruit cultivation. The maximum area under Mango cultivation is in Yamunanagar district of 5419 hectares, Ambala 1257 hectares, Panchkula 950 hectares, Karnal 629 hectares and Kurukshetra 430 hectares.Haryana Chief Secretary, Mrs Urvashi Gulati had suggested holding of business meets by inviting exporters of mangoes so as to encourage the mango growers to adopt new technologies to increase production of mangoes. She said that only varieties with long shelf life have potential for export. The farmers could be motivated to grow varieties with long shelf life but climatic factors would have their role to play.

This time 3060 entries of 401 varieties of mangoes have been received at the Mango Mela. out of which 2355 of Mangoes & 326 of Mango Products mouth-watering Mango varieties were displayed by the farming community from various states like Haryana (2516), Punjab (211), Himachal Pradesh (102) & Uttar Pradesh (231) besides 368 entries of Government institutes / universities. The Mango and Mango products were showcased at its best in a part of Gardens specially crafted to suit to the display of these products. This time the cultural programme were Haryanvi Vandana, Haryanavi Lok Nritys and Sufiana Kalam by Prof. Hemraj. Similarly, the Cultural Programme for 4th evening are Baam Lehari by Harvinder Rana & Party, Haryana Ki Matti and Quawalli by Meharban Ali & Party. In addition, the Day Performers which have been engaged are Haryanvi Dance & Orchestra- Haryana, Kalbelia Sapera Dance-Jodhpur(Rajasthan), Bagpiper-Karnal, Jhangam-Kaithal, Beensapera-Panipat, Kacchi Ghori-Jaipur, Puppet Show-Jaipur, Dhol Nagara-Hodel Banchari, Long Man Bamboo Walker-Delhi, Kaala Udan Zadoo-Delhi and Bioscope-Delhi. The programme included folk dances, Punjabi Mirza and Sufi songs by Prof.Hem Raj too. The cultural programme kept the audience spell bound.

Haryana Governor, Mr Jagannath Pahadia has appreciated the efforts of the Tourism Department, Haryana for making sustained efforts to improve the standard of Tourism in the State. He also appreciated the efforts of the Department for making Ancient Mughal Gardens at Pinjore as one of the major tourist destination. He complemented Tourism and Horticulture Department Haryana for better organization of the Mango Mela this year. The Governor, who was also a Chief Guest in the concluding-cum-prize distribution function of the 19th Mela held at Yadavindra Garden, Pinjore said that the State had been benefited in many folds by these efforts of the Department and it had already popularized Haryana not only in the other parts of India but even in abroad.
