India and Russia have signed an agreement for setting up a 2,900-crore rupees joint venture project to co-develop and co-produce a military multi-role transport aircraft (MTA).
The joint venture will be formed between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, HAL and the Russian partners United Aircraft Corporation Rosoboron export to jointly develop and produce these aircraft.
Under the project approved by the Indian and Russian government, two hundred and five such aircraft are planned to be manufactured with equal share of work and cost between HAL and its Russian partners. The joint venture company will be set up at Bangalore in India for executing the project.
AIR correspondent says that the MTA aircraft have 15 to 20 tonne payload capacity, and it will have a speed of 800 kms per hour with a range of 25 hundred to 27 hundred kms. The aircraft will have two engines, state of the art features, modern avionics and glass cockpit.
