Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed gratitude to all the nationswho initiated and co-sponsored the resolution on International Year of Milletsat the United Nations. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, India is honoured to be at theforefront of popularising Millets, whose consumption furthers nutrition, foodsecurity and welfare of farmers. He said, it also offers research andinnovation opportunities for agriculture scientists and start-up communities.The Prime Minister said, the distinguished delegates were also served deliciousMillet Murukku. Mr Modi said, this is one snack he also relished and urgedeveryone to try it as well.


India sponsored UN resolution on International Year of Millets 2023 wasadopted yesterday by consensus in the United Nations General Assembly.


India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations T. S. Tirumurtithanked all co-sponsors especially Bangladesh, Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, Russiaand Senegal and all Member States of UN for their strong support.


The 193-member UN General Assembly hasunanimously adopted the resolution sponsored by India, declaring 2023 as theInternational Year of Millets, aimed at raising awareness about the healthbenefits of the grain. The resolution titled ‘International Year ofMillets-2023’ was initiated by India with Bangladesh, Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria,Russia and Senegal and was co-sponsored by over 70 nations.


The resolution considers the urgent need toraise awareness of the climate-resilient and nutritional benefits of milletsand to advocate for diversified, balanced and healthy diets through theincreased sustainable production and consumption of millets. It also recognisesthe vast genetic diversity of millets and their adaptive capacities to a rangeof production environments. U.N. Member States lauded India for the initiativeand its leadership in facilitating negotiations on the resolution.



ExternalAffairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar held meeting with his Bangladesh counterpartDr A. K. Abdul Momen in Dhaka today. Addressing a joint press meet after themeeting Dr Jaishankar said that the significance of India's ties withBangladesh lies in its centrality in neighborhood first policy and growingrelevance in India's act east policy. Bangladesh is a valued partner not onlyin South Asia but in the entire Indo-Pacific region.


Dr. S. Jaishankar said, both the countriesare working hard to expand relationship in all dimensions ranging fromsecurity, trade, connectivith & transport to culture and defence. Thecomfort level is so high that all issues could be resolved through dialogue.


India today commemorated Chabahar Day on the sidelines of the MaritimeIndia Summit-2021. The event was held virtually. Ministers from Afghanistan,Armenia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Uzbekistan participated in the event.


Addressing the Ministerial-Level opening session, External AffairsMinister Dr. S. Jaishankar said, the shift in the fulcrum of global economicgrowth towards Asia is creating unprecedented opportunities for connectivity inthe region. He said, there is a huge infrastructure deficit in the region whichneeds to be met to fulfil the growing aspirations of our people. The Ministersaid, Government of India recognising the importance of regional connectivitymade a landmark decision to undertake an overseas port investment in Chabahar.He said, while the project had been under discussion for some time, it wasduring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Iran in 2016 that a TrilateralAgreement to establish an International Transport and Transit Corridor was signedby India, Iran and Afghanistan. Dr Jaishankar said, the establishment andoperations of India Ports Global Limited at Shahid Behesti Port in Chabahar isthe practical realisation of this important initiative.


Today’s event reflects India’s strong commitment to work togetherwith all regional stakeholders to enhance connectivity in the region and toprovide unhindered access to the sea to landlocked Central Asian countries throughChabahar. Today’s event also commemorates five years of the signing of theTripartite Agreement on the establishment of a Trilateral Transport and TransitCorridor. This agreement is a fitting tribute to the rich civilisational,cultural and trade links between India, Afghanistan, Iran and Central Asia.


Dr Jaishankar said, Chabahar port has not only emerged as a commercialtransit hub for the region but also facilitated the delivery of humanitarianassistance, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The port is part of our shared commitment towards peace, stability andprosperity of the people of Afghanistan. India has utilized the Chabahar portto ship 75 thousand Metric Tonnes of wheat as humanitarian food assistance toAfghanistan in September 2020. India also assisted Iran to fight the worst everlocust invasion in the last 25 years by supplying 25 Metric Tonnes of Malathionin June 2020, again through the Chabahar port. The second batch of 25 MetricTonnes has recently reached Chabahar Port. Besides the Indian exports of foodproducts, the port has also handled several shipments and trans-shipments fromRussia, Brazil, Thailand, Germany, Ukraine and the UAE.


Dr Jaishankar said, the International North South Transport Corridor orINSTC is an important trade corridor project.

International North South Transport Corridor INSTC is an important tradecorridor project. Wherein India is partnering with 12 countries to establish aneconomic corridor for the benefit of our peoples. We also welcome the interestof Uzbekistan and Afghanistan to join the multilateral corridor project.Establishing an eastern corridor through Afghanistan would maximize itspotential. India has also proposed the inclusion of Chabahar in the INSTCroute.


The External Affairs Minister expressed hope that during the INSTCCoordination Council meeting, member states will agree to the expansion of theINSTC route to include the Chabahar Port and also agree on expanding themembership of this project.


Dr Jaishankar said, the search for efficient trade routes and betterconnectivity has been one of the powerful driving forces of history and it hasdetermined the prospects of many nations, regions and civilizations over time.He said, today, as the world goes through a fundamental re-balancing,correcting many of the distortions of the past, it is only natural thatconnectivity should be central to that exercise.


More than one crore 66 lakh 16 thousanddoses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to the beneficiaries in thecountry so far. The Health and Family Welfare Ministry today informed that atotal of nine lakh 94 thousand 452 doses of vaccines were administered in thelast 24 hours.


Meanwhile, the country's COVID-19 recoveryrate presently stands at 97.03 per cent with a total recovery of more than 14thousand patients within 24 hours. The Ministry said, more than one crore eightlakh 26 thousand patients have already been recovered from this disease so farand there are one lakh 73 thousand 413 active cases in the country whichcomprises 1.55 per cent of the total positive cases. A total of 17 thousand 407new cases were reported in the country in the past 24 hours taking thecumulative number of positive cases to over one crore 11 lakh 56 thousand. TheHealth Ministry said, 89 deaths were reported within 24 hours taking the tollto over one lakh 57 thousand across the country. Various laboratories conductedmore than seven lakh 75 thousand tests of Corona virus samples in the last 24hours taking the total number of tests to more than 21 crore 91 lakh.


In Madhya Pradesh, the COVID positivity rateincreased to 2.5 per cent. With Corona cases surfacing once again, ChiefMinister Shivraj Singh Chouhan directed officials to take preventive measuresespecially in districts adjoining Maharashtra. More details from our correspondent--

"Madhya Pradeshon Wednesday recorded 417 fresh COVID cases, while 293 patients recovered from infection. No new death linked toCOVID-19 was reported in the state. The fatality count stood unchanged at3,865. No new COVID-19 case was reported in 15 of the total 52 districts in thestate. Indore reported highest 156 new infections followed by Bhopal with 90new cases. Meanwhile, Health Department officials informed that most of the oxygenand ICU beds are vacant in hospitals. The recovery rate in Madhya Pradesh is97.4 per cent. Pooja P. Vardhan AIR News, Bhopal.


Indigenous Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin hasdemonstrated interim clinical efficacy of 81 per cent in its phase three trial.


The trial involved 25 thousand 800participants across 21 sites. The first interim analysis is based on 43 casesof which 36 cases of Covid-19 were observed in the placebo group versus 7 casesobserved in the Covaxin group resulting in vaccine efficacy of 81 per cent. Thevaccine is developed by the Bharat Biotech in partnership with Indian Councilof Medical Research.


In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir,Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has appealed to the eligible people to getvaccinated in the ongoing Second Phase of COVID vaccination drive. TheLieutenant Governor today received the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine atGovernment Medical College Hospital, Jammu. After getting vaccinated, heappealed to all the eligible people to get vaccinated, saying this will help usto win the fight against COVID-19 in J&K.


In Telangana, over 28 thousand elderlypeople and those who are above 45 years of age with comorbidities have beenvaccinated while the Second Phase vaccination is underway. The State Healthauthorities have so far administered COVID vaccine to over four lakh 79thousand.


Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and hiswife Gursharan Kaur took the first jab of COVID vaccine today at AIl IndiaInstitute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his parents today got the firstdose of the COVID-19 vaccine at the Lok Nayak Jay Prakash Narayan hospital inthe National Capital.


In the ongoing phase of the vaccination drive, people aged 60 years andabove and those in age group 45 to 59 years having co-morbidities are beingadministered the vaccines at 192 hospitals across Delhi. Fifty two-year old, MrKejriwal has been receiving treatment for diabetes.


In Rajasthan, record two lakh 15 thousand213 persons were vaccinated yesterday on the third day of the Second Phase ofthe COVID vaccination. In the just three days, three lakh 73 thousand 916people above 60 years of age have got vaccinated in the state. More detail fromour correspondent --

Eldery people showed enthusiasm as they turned out in a large number atvaccination centers across the state. More than 1 lakh 95 thousand personsabove 60 years of age vaccinated yesterday. Meanwhile, more than 200 fresh casewere reported yesterday in the state after 39 days, out of which 50 case werereported in Dungarpur district alone. After one month, 40 fresh case were also reportedin Jaipur.  Chief Minister Ashok Gehlothas said in a message that COVID is not over yet and it is spreading rapidly inmany states. The Election Commission has directed petrolpumps and other agencies to remove hoardings and advertisements of variousCentral schemes depicting photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi within 72hours in poll-bound West Bengal. A delegation of senior TMC leaders met the ECofficials yesterday and alleged that the use of Prime Minister Modi’s photo onadvertisements of various Central schemes and COVID Vaccination Certificatesare violating the Model Code of Conduct.

The election commission is taking all necessary steps to ensure free, fairand peaceful polling. Taking a cue from all opposition political parties, thistime steps are being taken regarding movement of the central forces. Earlier,it was alleged that central forces are not used properly during elections inWest Bengal. According to sources in the CEO office of the state, this timespecial observers will be given extra power to deploy the personnel of CentralArmed Police Force. The assembly elections in West Bengal are going to be heldin eight phases and the ECI has already engaged four special observers for thestate. In a meeting with the observers, yesterday the commission has made thedecision that special general observer and special police observers willsupervise the movement of the forces. In Tamil Nadu, political activities aregaining momentum to form alliance  tocontest Assembly elections due to be held in a single phase on the 6th ofApril. AIADMK is having interview with more than eight thousand party cadreswho have filed for a ticket to contest election.


DMK has also started the process ofselecting the party cadres for contesting the election. Both the NDA and theDMK fronts are yet to finalize the alliance though several rounds of talks havebeen conducted. 


In a major boost to the textile industry,the Gujarat Government has announced establishment of two mega textile parks.This was announced by the Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel during his budgetspeech in the State Assembly yesterday. These two mega textile parks in Gujarat will be set up as a part of anannouncement made in the Union Budget for setting up of seven mega textileparks. According to sources, this will help in making the industry globallycompetitive. Mega Investment Textile Parks will also help generate moreemployment. Co-chairman of ASSOCHAM Gujarat state council Chintan Thaker saidthat a single cluster will help in bringing more investment in the textilesector. Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that theDwarka Expressway will be completed by August next year. The total length ofthis express way is 29 kilometres. Out of which 18.9 kilometres length falls inHaryana and remaining 10.1 kilometres in Delhi. Addressing a press conferenceafter visiting the Dwarka Expressway site today, Mr Gadkari said, theexpressway is India's first nine-kilometre long eight lane flyover on singlepier. He said, the Dwarka Expressway is also the first elevated urbanexpressway in the country. The Minister said, this will reduce air pollution inthe Delhi. Mr Gadkari said, this is the first instance where around 12 thousandtrees were transplanted at massive level.


In Jharkhand, four Jawans of JharkhandJaguar Police force martyred and seven Jawans sustained severe injuries in apressure IED blast that took place this morning on Longee hills in the forestnear village Hoyahatu West Singhbhum district. More  from our correspondent --

In another Naxalincident that took place today morning during the search operations beingconducted by Police and Paramilitary forces in the Maoist affected forest areasof West Singhbhum district, three Jawans of Jharkhand Jaguar martyred on thespot and one jawan lost his life undergoing medical treatment at MedicalHospital in Ranchi. The troops have been conducting search operations sincelast 15 days in these areas and the blast took place by the IED bomb planted byNaxal forces. One Jawan of 197 battalion of Central Reserve Police Force andfive other Jawans of Jharkhand Jaguar have also sustained severe injuries. Theinjured jawans have been airlifted to Ranchi and are undergoing medicaltreatment in the hospital. This is second IED blast incident by Naxal forces ina span of ten days. As the Gram Pradhan she  was instrumental in forming 8 Self Help Groups in the village which earlierdidn't have even one SHG. She is also constantly engaged in improving theinfrastructure of her village. She has worked on construction of roads andsewage.Talking to All India Radio News she said she aims at improving thehealth and education.

In Myanmar, it was the most violent dayyesterday in the ongoing protest against the military government. UnitedNations Special Envoy Christine Schraner Burgener said in New York that sincethe coup happened in Myanmar on 1st of February, it was the bloodiest day as 38people died in the single day. She said, in conversation with the MyanmarDeputy Military Chief Soe Win, she warned him that the military was likely toface strong measures from some countries for the coup. In response, he toldthat they were used to sanctions and have survived. In Yangon, at least eightpeople were killed. Seven of them were killed in the northern part of the citywhen security forces opened fire last evening.

Asian champion pugilist Pooja Rani enteredthe semifinals to secure a medal in 75 kilogram category at the 35th BoxamInternational Boxing Tournament in Castellon, Spain. However, two-time Worldbronze-winner Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) bowed out after a quarterfinal loss in69 kilogram category.


Pooja Rani is a three-time Asian medallistand also a 2014 Asian Games bronze-winner.


In cricket, England were 144 for 5at tea  on the opening day today inthe  fourth and final Test match atNarendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad against India. For India Axer Patel andSiraj claimed two wickets each and Washington Sundar took one wicket.
