THE HEADLINES,
  • Counting of votes for 542 Lok Sabha seats and four State assemblies begins.

Counting of votes for the 17th Lok Sabha and  Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh began this morning amidst tight security arrangements.

Out of the total 543 Parliamentary seats, elections were held in 542 constituencies. The Election Commission had cancelled polls to the Vellore seat in Tamil Nadu on the grounds of excessive use of money power.
The fresh date for elections in Vellore is yet to be announced. There are over eight thousand candidates in the fray.
The results are expected by late evening due to tallying of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail slips with the Electronic Voting Machines. This is the first time that results of voting machines will be matched with slips generated by paper trail machines in the General Elections. The exercise will take place in five polling stations selected randomly per Assembly segment.
Our Lucknow correspondent reports that counting is taking place at 77 centres:-

  
"All the strong rooms locks were opened in front of representatives of political parties or candidates and the observers of the Election Commission in every counting centers. For Azamgarh and Kushinagar counting is taking place on two centers in the district. Special cabins have been formed for matching of VVPAT slips. In the wake of recent rumours regarding EVMs, IG Law and Order of State, Praveen Kumar has issued directions to the police chiefs in districts to maintain strict security arrangements in and around the counting centres. The three tier security system at counting center is having Central Armed Police Forces securing the inner circle and PAC and State police in other layers. Section 144 has been imposed around the counting center area. SUSHIL CHANDRA TIWARI, AIR NEWS, LUCKNOW"

In Madhya Pradesh,  counting of votes for 29 Lok Sabha seats of the state is being held at 292 centres across 51 district headquarters  A report from our correspondent:- 
 "The political future of 438 candidates including 38 women and one third gender candidate in Madhya Pradesh will be decided today. Congress and BJP are in direct fight in almost all 29 seats in the state. The prominent faces are BJP state president Rakesh Singh from Jabalpur, Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar from Morena, ex-Union minister and Congress nominee Kantilal Bhuria from Ratlam, senior congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia from Guna. The Bhopal Lok Sabha seat also witnessed one of the most keenly watched contest between Congress veteran Digvijay Singh and Malegaon blast case accused Pragya Singh Thakur. Sanjeev Sharma, AIR News, Bhopal."

In Odisha, simultaneous counting of votes for the elections to 21 Lok Sabha and 146 Assembly seats has begun a short while ago. More from our Correspondent:-
"The Election Commission has made all the preparations for smooth and error-free counting of votes. Several arrangements, including installation of CCTVs, air conditioners, videography, and deployment of security personnel, have been made at the counting centres for smooth completion of the process. One-hundred 72 platoons of Special Armed Police and sixty-nine companies of Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed at the counting centres to avoid any untoward incidents during the process. SN Pattnaik, AIR News, Sambalpur."
Our Andhra Pradesh correspondent reports a three-tier security system is in place at the counting centres to ensure smooth passes of counting for 175 Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha constituencies.
    
 "This is the first Assembly and Lok Sabha election in Andhra Pradesh after the state was  carved out following  bifurcation  in 2014.  State Chief Electoral Officer Gopal Krishna Dwivedi  said the poll trends will be known by 12pm noon but the final results will be declared only in the night.  Meanwhile, the first result is expected from Narsapur assembly constituency in West Godavari district as it has the lowest number of 174 polling stations  and the last result is expected from Rampachodavaram constituency in East Godavari district which has the highest number of 397 polling stations. With GK Rao,  Suprasanthi AIR News Vijayawada."

 In Tamil Nadu, counting of votes polled in 38 of the 39 Lok Sabha seats is underway. More from our correspondent:
 "Over 36-thousand police personnel including 19 companies of central armed police force are providing security . 88 general observers, district election officers and returning officers are coordinating the process, which is being video-graphed. A little over 17-thousand election officials are involved in the counting. Besides the Lok Sabha General Elections, Tamil Nadu witnessed the largest ever Assembly by-elections also, which are considered to be having high stakes on the stability of the AIADMK-led state government. Jayasingh, AIR News, Chennai."

Our Arunachal Pradesh correspondent reports that Counting of votes for the 57 Assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats of Arunachal Pradesh has begun at 20 centres.
Meanwhile, a 24-hour EVM Control Room has been set up at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi to monitor complaints related to polled EVMs. The Control Room contact number is 011-23052123.
The News Services Division of All India Radio has made elaborate arrangements for providing authentic and latest results of Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in four states. For the first time, AIR News is continuously broadcasting special programme on election results for 40 hours.  News Services Division  has started 10 minute bulletins through out the day from 7 this morning to 11 pm tomorrow. The English and Hindi mid-day bulletins will also be extended by 15 minutes which will continue up to Monday.

The Election Commission has come up with a new initiative to provide real-time trends and results of the Lok Sabha vote counting across the states and union territories. The counting trends and results will be available on the Commission Website  <www.results.eci.gov.in>  as well as on the Voter Helpline App. from 8  this morning.

  The Election Commission  has rejected opposition parties' demand  to count VVPAT slips before the commencement of counting of votes polled in EVMs. The Commission after in-depth discussions over the issue said that it has neither been found possible nor feasible to accede to this demand in the overall context and especially in view of the judgment of Supreme Court.  It said, the VVPAT Counting Sequence will remain as per the Supreme Court Approved Guidelines.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has asked all private satellite TV channels to strictly comply with their respective undertakings of carrying news or non-news content. A day before the counting of votes for Lok Sabha polls, ministry has issued an advisory to all private satellite TV channels to strictly ensure that there is no violation of the conditions of the guidelines. 
In accordance with the 2011 policy guidelines for uplinking of television channels from India, the Ministry gives permission for uplinking context under non-news and news catgegories.

The Centre has cleared four names recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for elevation as judges of the apex court. The four appointed judges are Justice Aniruddha Bose, Justice A S Bopanna, Justice B R Gavai and Justice Surya Kant. Law Ministry has issued the notification yesterday after President Ram Nath Kovind  signed their warrants of appointment. Supreme Court will reach its full sanctioned strength of 31 judges after the appointment of these four new judges. As of now, the apex court is functioning with 27 judges including the Chief Justice.    Early trend shows BJP is leading in Chikkamagaluru and Chikkodi Assembly By- poll.

The Centre has cleared the appointment of Justice D N Patel as the next Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. In a notification issued yesterday Law Ministry said that Justice Patel will be the chief justice of the Delhi High Court from June 7th. Justice Patel is currently posted at the Jharkhand High Court. According to the law ministry, four judges  Talwant Singh, Rajnish Bhatnagar, Asha Menon and Brijesh Sethi were also appointed  to the Delhi High Court.

The National Investigation Agency has filed a charge sheet against four suspected terrorists of the Islamic State of Jammu and Kashmir for the attack on a police team in Srinagar last year. NIA had taken over the probe into the incident from the state police nearly 20-days after the attack at the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar on November 24 last year. Jammu and Kashmir Police had arrested three suspected members of the terror group immediately after the incident and later NIA had arrested one more accused.

In Arunachal Pradesh, security forces have launched a massive combing operation in the jungles of Tirap, Longding and Changlang districts in search of the perpetrators involved in the killing of an MLA and 10 others in Tirap District yesterday. NPP MLA and contestant from Khonsa West Assembly Constituency, was killed in the ambush by some unidentified gunmen near Khonsa.
Army sources have confirmed that all likely routes of escape have been effectively blocked. Intensive checks are also being carried along the Nagaland - Arunachal borders.

Sri Lanka’s Attorney General has ordered a full criminal investigation against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and several other senior officials. The decision is based on two interim reports of the special investigation committee to look into the Easter Sunday attacks that killed more than 250 people including 45 foreigners.  Attorney General  submitted two letters to the acting IGP requesting for investigation against IGP, former Defense Secretary Hemasiri Fernando, the National Intelligence Chief, and the Commanding Officer of the Special Task Force.

  South African lawmakers have re-elected Cyril Ramaphosa as the president of the country. Members of Parliament  from the African National Congress have chosen the head of state in the parliament's first post-election sitting. The party won 230 out of 400 seats in the election on May 8. The African National Congress party won the ballot with 57.5 percent of the vote, its thinnest majority since the end of apartheid. Ramaphosa will be sworn in on Saturday and name a deputy president and cabinet at the weekend.

  In Central African Republic, more than 26 people were killed and many injured when an armed group attacked two villages in northwestern part of the country. According to United Nation's peacekeeping mission, the massacre took place in the villages of Koundjili and Djoumjoum. UN sources said, the killings were carried out by a group called 3R which hosted a meeting with the villagers and then gunned them down indiscriminately.

In boxing, the men's and women's semi final matches will be played today in the second India open International Boxing tournament in Guwahati.  All eyes are set in the 51 kg category match where ace boxer M C Mary Kom will up against rising compatriot Nikhat Zareen. A report:-

Mary Kom has entered into the Semi Final by defeating her opponent from Nepal in the Quarter Final round.  Zareen expressed her excitement in facing her idol in the much anticipated Semi Final clash. In other matches, local girl Jamuna Boro will face Meenakumari in 54 kg while Lovlina Borgohain will take on Uzbekistan's Yunosova in the 69 kg category.  In 64 kg category,  two local boxers - Ankushita Boro will play against Pwilao Basumatary.  In men's semi Finals,  Shiva Thapa will take on Poland's Krystian in the 60 kg category.  In 64 kg , two prominent boxers Ankush Dahiya and Rohit Tokas will bout against each other.  On the other hand,  another medal prospect Summit Sangwan will face Sanjeet in heavyweight 91 kg category. In Archery World Cup Stage III, four Indians including Deepika Kumari and Tarundeep Rai advanced into third round in recurve individual section at Antalya in Turkey.
In Women's individual section, former world No 1 Deepika defeated Khatuna Lorig 6-5 in the second round and set up clash against Veronika Marchenko of Ukraine in the third round. Laishram Bombayla Devi also sailed into the third round.
In men's individual section, former Olympian Tarundeep Rai  remained in the medal fray after beating Gasper Strajhar of Slovenia.
