  • Campaigning for Tuesday's third phase of Lok Sabha elections is in full swing.

Campaigning is in full swing for the Tuesday's  third phase of Lok Sabha elections. 116 constituencies, spread over 13 states and 2 Union Territories, will go to polls in this phase. Voting  will take place for all 26 constituencies in Gujarat, 20 in Kerala, 14 each in Maharashtra and Karnataka, 10 in Uttar Pradesh, 7 in Chhattisgarh, 6 in Odisha, 5 each in Bihar and West Bengal, 4 in Assam, 2 in Goa, 1 each in Jammu and Kashmir, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and Tripura.

Leaders from various political parties are holding rallies and roadshows across the country.

Senior BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the NDA government will take strong steps against infiltrators if voted to power again. Mr. Modi asserted that incomplete work of border fencing will be taken up with priority. The Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to pass the Citizenship Amendment Act in Parliament if NDA government comes to power. Mr Modi said that the development model of the country will be security for all and respect for all. He criticised the Trinamool Congress led government in West Bengal and said that there is no development in the state. He was addressing an election rally at Buniyadpur in South Dinajpur District of West Bengal this morning.

Senior BJP leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the opposition parties were spreading fear and lies that, if NDA returns to power reservations will be tampered with. Addressing an election meeting at Forbesganj in Bihar he said corruption, dynastic politics, loot in name of poor and politics of caste and religion will stop.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi has promised 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and government services if his party led alliance is voted to power. Addressing an election meeting at Supaul in Bihar Mr Gandhi said Prime Minister Modi had misled the country in the matter of creation of a record number of jobs for youth.

Still in Bihar, JD(U) President and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar addressed election meetings in Supaul and Madhepura and sought votes in favour of party candidates to speed up development of the country. RJD leader Tejaswi Prasad Yadav addressed election meetings in Khagaria and Madhepura. While addressing election meetings in Seemanchal areas of the state  Hindustani Awam Morcha Chief Jitan Ram Manjhi and RLSP Chief Upendra Kuswaha exhorted  people to vote in favor of the grand alliance. LJP President Ram Vilas Pawan also addressed election meetings in Khagaria and Madhepura in support of NDA candidates.  In third Phase the polling will be held in five constituencies namely Araria, Supaul, Madhepura, Khagaria and Jhanjharpur. "In last elections RJD won two seats Madhepura and Araria  while BJP won Jhanjharpur, Congress - Supaul and LJP -Khagaria . In Madhepura Pappu Yadav won from RJD ticket but this time he is contesting as Independent candidate. During 2014 elections  Sharad yadav fought from Madhepura as JD(U) candidate , but this time he has switched to RJD . Jhanjharpur MP Birendra Chaudhary has been dropped under the NDA seat-sharing formula.  The alliance announced  Ram Preet Mandal as it candidate from the seat.  Ranjita Ranjan of congress is seeking re-election from Purnea, while Mehboob Ali Kaiser of LJP from Khagaria seat.  Vikas Sheel Insaan Party  Chief Mukesh Sahni is also in fray from Khagaria. Later in the day Prime Minister will address the rallies in  Etah and Bareily districts of Uttar Pradesh. Leaders of various political parties are holding rallies to woo the voters across the state. More from our correspondent :

"BJP leader and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressing  meeting at Moradabad said BJP governments are working in interest of people and national security. He is also to address poll mettings at Farrukhbad and Kannauj. BJP seniour leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address two  rallies at Etah and Bareilly this afternoon .  Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav and BSP supremo Mayawati campaigned  at Rampur. Congress leaders Raj Babbar and Pramod Tiwari are  taking  part in poll publicity activities at Jaunpur , Sultanpur and Amethi .  Meanwhile Samajwadi Party has announced Pandhari Yadav as  its candidate from Phoolpur parliamentary seat. In Kerala all 20 constituencies will go to polls. There  are 227 candidates in the fray.  National leaders of the three major fronts - LDF, UDF and the NDA -are campaigning in the state for their party candidates. BJP President Amit Shah will hold rallies in the state. Here is a report from our correspondent:-

"Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra this morning addressed an election meeting  in Wayanad where party chief Rahul Gandhi is contesting.

"Our freedom fighters gave their lives for all of us, they give their lives for a country in which all of us which with all of separate idologies, with all of our separate ways of being should thrive and flourish."

Addressing the public meeting  in Mananthavadi, the Congress leader said that the BJP government neglected the farmers and tribal people in the country and added that if the Congress is voted to power, basic income would ensured for poor through NYAY scheme. Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani, who is the BJP candidate against Rahul Gandhi at Amethi will arrive in Wayanad tomorrow and will hold a road show. CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury is campaigning for LDF candidates in Kannur.  Shamila, AIR News, Thiruvananthapuram."

BJP President Amit Shah will also  campaign for the party at Shimoga in Karnataka. In Gujarat Senior BJP leader and union minister Piyush Goyal and senior Congress leader Shatrughna Sinha along with other leaders are campaigning for their respective parties.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi has charged the Congress of building a false narrative around electronic voting machines and demonetisation. In an interview to a private TV channel, Mr. Modi said his government has achieved milestones in various fields of development and in the next five years, will work faster to achieve the dreams of the common people. Prime Minister also charged the opposition of making false promises to the people and following a communal agenda. 


In Arunachal Pradesh 69.71 percent polling has been recorded in the re-polling being held in 19 Polling Booths till 12 pm. Polling started at 6 am this morning and concluded at 2 pm.

In Bihar re-polling is underway peace fully at one polling booth in Jamui parliamentary constituency amidst tight security. An estimated 35 percent electors have exercised their franchise till 1 pm. Re-polling was necessitated due to damage of EVMs during the first phase of polling on April 11th. Polling began at 7 in the morning and it will end at 4 p.m.


Scrutiny of nominations for the fifth phase of Lok Sabha polls is being held today. Last date for withdrawal of candidature is Monday. 51 parliamentary constituencies spread over 7 states are going to polls in this phase. These are 5 in Bihar, 2 in Jammu and Kashmir, 4 in Jharkhand, 7 in Madhya Pradesh, 12 in Rajasthan, 14 in Uttar Pradesh and 7 in West Bengal.


The Railway Ministry has ordered an enquiry into the derailment of Twelve coaches of Poorva Express near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh early hours today. Commissioner of Railway Safety A K Jain will conduct the enquiry and submit a report.

According to railway officials as many as 14 passengers were injured in the incident, who have been admitted in a hospital in Kanpur. Three people were seriously injured and eleven others suffered minor injuries.

The train was going to New Delhi when the accident occurred near Rooma railway station in Kanpur urban district at around 1 am. 13 trains have been diverted and one canceled. Senior railway officials are on the spot and efforts are on to restore traffic soon. Meanwhile, the relief train has left for Delhi with the stranded passengers.


Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina has said that the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals must go back to their homeland of Rakhaine state in Myanmar. Press Secretary to the Bangladesh Prime Minister Ihsanul Karim said this in a media briefing yesterday after a meeting between Sheikh Hasina and the visiting UAE Minister. He said that Bangladesh and Myanmar had earlier held discussions over the issue.

Our correspondent reports that the two countries had signed agreements for their repatriation in 2017.


US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said he is still leading Washington's diplomatic efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula. Speaking at a press conference yesterday, he said that nothing has changed and that his diplomatic team continues to remain in the lead.  On Thursday, North Korean foreign ministry had called for excluding Pompeo from denuclearization talks.


Egyptians are voting in a referendum that aims to cement the rule of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the former coup leader. The three-day plebiscite is expected to approve sweeping constitutional changes that will extend Sisi's term until at least 2024.

The amendments would allow Sisi, to run for another six-year term while boosting his control over the judiciary and giving the military even greater influence in political life. Egypt's parliament had already passed the proposed amendments.

Sisi overthrew Morsi in 2013 and the following year won his first term as president. He was re-elected in March 2018 with more than 97 per cent of the vote after standing virtually unopposed.


A Peruvian judge ordered 36 months of preventive prison for former President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski yesterday as authorities investigate his alleged involvement in a corruption case. Peru's judicial authority said via its Twitter account that Kuczynski, who is currently on a 10-day detention since April the 10th is being investigated for money laundering. Last week, Kuczynski was arrested during an investigation into Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht and its alleged bribery of government officials.


Former World Champion, Mirabai Chanu will spearhead India’s challenge at the Asian Weightlifting Championship, 2019 that begins at Ningbo, China today. Chanu will be competing in the 49kg category from 48kg following the International Weightlifting Federation's rejig of weight categories. She has made a strong comeback after having suffered a lower-back injury that kept her out of action for nearly nine months.  She will have potent competitors.

Among male weightlifters, India’s hopes will be on Jeremy Lalrinnunga, the gold-medallist at the Youth Olympic Games. Commonwealth Games champion, Sathish Sivalingam has pulled out owing to performance troubles.


In IPL Cricket, Rajasthan Royals will host Mumbai Indians this evening. The match will begin at 4 PM. Currently, Mumbai is second  while Rajasthan are placed seventh in the points  table.  In another match, Delhi Capitals will face Kings XI Punjab at 8 PM in Delhi. Delhi and Punjab are at the 3rd and 4th positions in the points table.
