'Mann Ki Baat' Programme on June 30: PM Modi calls upon people to start mass movement water conservation

In his first Mann Ki Baat Programme through All India Radio on 30th of last month, after resuming office for the second term, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called upon people to start a mass movement for water conservation and resolve to save every drop of water amidst water scarcity in several parts of the country.

He said an awareness campaign should be started which should not only focus on water related problems but also propagate ways to save water.

In Rajasthan, traditional water conservation units are lifeline of the border districts. Traditional ‘Beriyan’ system is the only source of drinking water in many border villages of Barmer.

‘Beriyan’ is a small well-like structure, which is made on the flat land between the sandy slopes. In these ‘Beriyans’, water accumulates from under ground water springs.

There are hundreds of villages in Barmer's five tehsils, where ‘beriyan’ are the only source of drinking water.

According to the survey conducted recently by the district administration, there are more than 17 hundred Beriyans here. These Beriyans are five to ten decades old. These are being renovated under the Jal Shakti Abhiyan.
